Singer-songwriter, guitarist, and pianist Jenni Alpert (birth name: Cameron / Cami) was born in Los Angeles, CA and adopted out of the foster care system at the age of four.
Upon reuniting with her biological father who was homeless, addicted, and running from the law at the time, yet a musician just like her, a documentary team made a short doc called Homeless: the Soundtrack directed by Oscar-nominated, Peabody and Emmy Award winning documentary film director Irene Taylor Brodsky, produced by Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz about the early stages of their first encounter and the unfolding of the journey of their biological reunion capturing the unique bond they share. Now, almost five years to date of their meeting, the two currently travel, speak, and perform sharing their biological reunion adventures and creative approaches towards transformation in story and song together as Community Service Performing Artists at Rescue Missions, Homeless Shelters, and local venues around the country alongside supporting the making of the short documentary under the name Cami and Don, The Biological Duo. Read More

BUY MUSIC DIRECTLY FROM THE ARTIST HERE
Jenni Alperttag:jennialpert.com,2005:Post/55069322021-11-07T07:00:00-08:002022-07-18T00:46:41-07:00A Short Documentary and More
Homeless: The Soundtrack is an independent short documentary created and directed by Irene Taylor Brodsky produced by Chockstone Pictures and Vermilion Films about the early months in reunion of my birth father and I which explores the dichotomy of two totally different worlds where music bonds together an incredible relationship and underscores an extraordinary transformation after having been separated for over thirty years. Watch Here.

After years of being estranged from both her birth parents from having been placed in the foster care system to be adopted out in the early years of her life, having missed the opportunity to met her birth mother when she was still living, years later with the assistance of a private investigator, Alpert found and reunited with her biological father. Born in Los Angeles and adopted at the age of four, she started to sing and play piano while staying in various foster homes and began writing songs early. Upon becoming the first Jazz vocalist accepted to UCLA’s four year Jazz Music Ethnomusicology program lead by Kenny Burrell, Alpert took up the guitar as well and began to write and record songs on both instruments independently releasing over 6 albums and touring in over 14 countries to date. Shy of four years ago she found and reunited with her birth father who at the time was homeless, running from the law, and addicted, but a musician as well. Through their biological reunion and unprecedented partnership their reunion story and her birth father’s transformation inspired the making of a short documentary “Homeless: the Soundtrack” directed by Emmy Award winning director Irene Taylor Brodsky discovered and produced by Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz, which garnered several film awards, featured at Tribeca Film Festival, and is scheduled for international release later this year.
Well, next week as it so happens, that very short documentary (26min) that Don my birth father and I are featured in about our reunion and life together called Homeless: the Soundtrack created and directed by Oscar nominated, Peabody and Emmy winning documentary director Irene Taylor Brodsky will be showing in Los Angeles at THE LAEMMLE ROYAL THEATER on Santa Monica Blvd from this Aug 31st through Sept 7th during their matinee hour once a day all week long and we would love for you to know about it in the event that you may be able to see it.

THE FILM
Homeless: The Soundtrack (trailer) is a short documentary about the reunion of my birth father and I explores the dichotomy of two totally different worlds where music bonds together an incredible relationship after having been separated for over thirty years. It tells the story of how I found my birth father Don living on the streets of Los Angeles living a life of drugs and petty crime running from the law, his self proclaimed transformation once we met, and our journey to know one another through the music we play together. It’s a very intimate story nestled in the larger pressing issue of homelessness in Los Angeles.

Thus far, the documentary has made its way through several film festivals this summer. The film premiered at Tribeca Film Festival and won a Jury mention, won best short film at Nantucket Film Festival. And while Don and I are playing music regularly around LA at local venues and for homeless centers and shelters, the filmmakers are making the film eligible for Academy Award consideration in the Documentary Short Subject category and we are touched to of been asked to do this and share our story.

I had known my birth father just about two weeks by this point after having help from a private investigator locate an address where Don received his mail, finally meeting him, then essentially going into what I called in “the field” slightly under cover spending days shadowing Don on the streets day and night observing and getting to know him while he was still living his previous life at the time. Regularly running from the law, committing petty crimes, and still getting high on drugs, we had spent about ten days up to this point reading books together, visiting museums, music events, eateries, craft coffee shops, beaches, taking walks and staying up late out on the streets in Don’s world discovering a connection and our commonalities - music being one of them. Despite the drugs, the gangs, the potential dangers and so on, I had prepared and stayed aware all the while loosing myself in the wonders of getting to know my birth father and it was a thrill to say the least. Not long after our adventures began, I finally started to reveal bits and pieces about myself sharing my own life stories, musicianship, and eventually invited Don to perform with me at a show I had scheduled. At that point he still only knew me as Cami (Cameron, my birth name) his curious and interested biological daughter but soon was to learn the life and story of my other path, having been adopted out of the foster care system and into the home of the Alpert’s by age four - my life and music as Jenni Alpert. Little did we know that just a few weeks after I picked Don up from being released from jail once having turned himself in to stop running from the law, and shy of the several days after setting him up in a temporary safe space familiar to the style Don was used to yet secure, protected, and close to where I lived at the time to continue our daily “family fun field trips” developing our new relationship which would later transpired into the journey that has been us together and Don’s self proclaimed transformation into a new life and his first time release out of “the system” since he was eight years old upon reunifying, we would be introduced to brilliant documentary film maker Irene Taylor Brodsky (http://moveablefest.com/irene-taylor-brodsky-homeless/) and have the privilege of being interviewed by her. Upon the days that came to pass spending more time with one another Irene shadowing us, she developed what is now a short documentary Homeless: The Soundtrack which depicts our story, finding and connecting with my birth father as music threads our life stories together and we are just so touched. Below are some photos of time spent with Irene and her documentation of us.

I am proud to share these photos as a visual ode to the incredible self proclaimed transformation that is Don today. It’s hard to believe that two years ago this month, my birth father, of whom I had reunited with a few weeks earlier that year for the first time since I was taken away and placed in the foster care system with their hopes I’d have a better future, decided to change his entire way of life from: using heavy drugs of every kind, committing petty crimes to maintain the lifestyle, and run from the law constantly high in between prisons (over seven to be exact) and homeless on the street having been in “the system” since he was eight years old to: something uncharted; turn himself in by his own will to serve out the jail time for running, stop doing drugs and living a life of crime, and try new safe things in order to continue to get to know me his biological daughter in a safer way all his own ideas on his own accord.
BLOG
Behind the Artist: As a child of the foster care system, an adolescent of adoption, and an adult of reunion, I would like to take a minute to share what an incredible journey this has been. Here are two collections of photos 1. My Biological Parents who made me and 2. My Adoptive Parents who raised me to help me become the person I am today, (close to the age I was adopted). Love is a large space with room for everyone. I receive many private messages of interest and inquiries and all are welcome. I am happy to share more and to help anyone through processing their situation and experiences anytime, thank you for connecting. From genetics to generosity and nature to nurture, this is a post of gratefulness and thankfulness for all sides that made my life what it has become today. Thank you for following along.

SUPPORTING DUSTBOWL REVIVAL
The long haul of hard work, commitment, and practice... and worth it every time... It was an incredible Fourth of July this year joining Dustbowl Revival and their fans at The Levitt Pavilion in California. These musicians introduce the depth of their individual instruments personifying that of each one while telling their own stories both with lyric and song. What was the largest honor for me personally though, was their graciousness when introducing themselves to me before the show as well as how open they and their audience were to receiving music from a virtually unfamiliar songwriter such as myself. Both parties welcomed my song and show as though I had been with them for years. If it weren’t for this collective group, my songs would not of been heard by such a large supportive audience. This incredibly entertaining band will captivate any audience and is worth catching and listening too. Thank you Dustbowl Revival.

Jenni Alperttag:jennialpert.com,2005:Post/55462062018-10-30T23:50:00-07:002018-12-09T00:48:53-08:00What is an SCurve

Stream “Listen to Your Heart”

Fresh off the remarkably busy and productive years following the release of her album Take It All, singer-songwriter Jenni Alpert will take her fresh blend of pop, soul, and jazz-Americana to the road once again. Alpert will begin an East Coast tour this month supporting Irish folk-rocker Luka Bloom, in addition to embarking on a set of headlining dates.

Having toured independently in over 14 countries, Alpert has also shared stages with veteran artists, including Bloom and Loudon Wainwright III, across the US and Europe. Alpert’s richly melodic songwriting and jazzy take on pop-rock form the perfect counter and companion to Bloom’s poetic Irish folk.

Alpert is also excited to announce “Listen to Your Heart” as the latest single from Take It All. The artist’s rich recording history includes a session at Sun Studios in Memphis, TN (home of Elvis, Johnny Cash, BB King and more) as well as a live release by Cappuccino Records, a vinyl label based in Italy. Alpert’s music has also been featured on major Network TV shows including Castle, CSI Miami, 16 and Pregnant and The Real World.

Daniel Pearl World Music Days

Daniel Pearl Foundation was founded with the mission to promote cross-cultural understanding through journalism, music, and dialogue.

Daniel Pearl World Music Days created in Daniel’s musical honor is a network of global concerts (held every October worldwide since 2002, it has promoted 1,500 concerts in over 60 countries) using “the power of music to promote tolerance and inspire respect for differences.” Here is how you can get involved: now taking submissions

I will be donating a performance to the Daniel World Music Days on October 11th. More information will be posted shortly.

History: On January 23, 2002 Jewish Journalist for The Wall Street Journal Daniel Pearl was kidnapped while working in Pakistan on his way to what he thought was an interview investigating the alleged links between the “shoe bomber” and Al-Qaeda. 9 days later he was brutally beheaded by his captors on film which was released as a world message because they believed him to be a Jewish spy. Someone must know where every journalist is at any given moment….” Daniel Pearl.

This past June, I was invited to Oshkosh, Wisconsin for the very first time to perform for the Christine Ann Foundation’s annual event Men Who Cook. This organization who’s mission is to provide safety, support, community awareness, outreach programs, and advocacy to survivors of trauma created a fundraiser that drew over 400 folks and over 50 community cooks of all professions to raise over $50,000 in funds to make a difference. What a great time. Visit here for more information on Christine Ann.
